MIDAS DELIVERS HEAVENLY SOUND FOR JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR
UK – After considering all the possible contenders, Sound Engineer Roger Lindsay decided the MIDAS XL8 console was the ideal Front of House mixing console to address and match the complex demands of the recent sell-out arena tour of Jesus Christ Superstar.

With a ten-piece live band and over forty vocalists, all individually mic’d, Lindsay required a console that not only offered a high channel count but also gave him maximum direct control of parameters at console surface level.

The complex musical direction and dynamic pace presented a real challenge, even for a seasoned live engineer like Lindsay. “From start to finish there’s no time to relax with so much going on. The way a Lloyd-Webber rock musical works in an arena environment is very different to a conventional band with just a few live vocals. We’re running around 50 channels for the band, which is not exceptional for a 10 piece unit, but we also feature over 40 live singers, many of whom, in addition to the nine principals, have multiple solo parts.”

However, Lindsay believes that the XL8 offers the perfect combination of features that has made this unique production more manageable: “POPulation Groups were one of the main reasons why a MIDAS XL8 was the obvious choice. The way that both these, and the VCAs jump to the top surface at the touch of a single button, is crucial. I’ve got to be able to instantly access multiple groups of disparate channels throughout the show and the XL.8 does this with the minimum of fuss.”

“The onboard dynamics provide a huge range of tools to deal with the ever-increasing demands of such a show. The carefully considered use of Vintage and Creative compression has given the band sound more impact, combined with dynamic EQ, which I’ve used extensively on vocals. This has been a huge advantage when dealing with over 40 very different voices within the cast, and by using these features selectively, it’s been possible to make subtle changes to each individual voice without compromising the overall dynamic of the show”.

During sound-checks at each arena Lindsay sets up both the band and vocal mix and then at show time is assisted by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Studio Engineer, Robin Sellars. “The beauty of the XL8 is that you can split the console down the middle to allow for two operators,” explains Lindsay. “Rob primarily concentrates on changes in the band mix during the show while I concentrate on the constantly moving feast that is the vocals. We do cross over occasionally so it sometimes looks like we’re playing a game of Twister, but Rob knows the material inside out and can juggle the band mix on VCA’s without us falling over each other. It’s a system which has worked well for us throughout the tour. The show doesn’t need to be effects-laden because it has its own energy, and because of this I keep it as organic as possible. Of course, the XL8 has been at the core of this: without its channel capacity and warm, analogue sound, the dynamic feel of the show would never have been achieved so successfully.”

MIDAS IS CLEAR SUCCESS AT NOBEL PEACE PRIZE CONCERT 2012

Norway – The annual Nobel Peace Prize Concert, held in Oslo, saw an extensive network of MIDAS live audio mixing consoles ensure well-loved artists, including Kylie Minogue, Jennifer Hudson, and Seal, sounded spectacular.

Hosted by the American actress Sarah Jessica Parker and Scottish actor Gerard Butler, the concert was recorded live and televised to over 120 countries to reach more than 500 million viewers worldwide. Set across three stages, the centre stage accommodated a full size orchestra conducted by Nick Davies. The three stage design ensures that the live televised show runs seamlessly from beginning to end as artist performances alternate between stages.

Norway’s biggest rental house - and long-term MIDAS partner AVAB-CAC, supplied full production for the show. The company deployed two MIDAS XL8s front of house: one for the 55 strong, individually mic’d, Norwegian Radio Orchestra and the second to take care of the array of international performers along with the in-house band.

In addition a total of four MIDAS PRO9s were used as monitor consoles - supplying numerous in-ear mixes for artists and orchestra, as well as to the multiple floor monitors across all three stages.

“The Nobel Peace Prize Concert is a high-profile gig that’s televised worldwide, so it’s essential that we work with the highest possible quality sound system,” said Asle Nilsen, head of pro-audio at AVAB-CAC. “This, combined with the MIDAS networking potential, makes the MIDAS’ PRO Series ideal for an event like this. After all we had more than 800 audio sources in the network!”

Networking such a huge event with multiple acts also saw Nilsen specify a combination of the MIDAS DL431 mic splitter and AES50 tie lines between the consoles. “To interface with the many audio sources, AVAB-CAC employed 192 channels of Midas DL431 active mic splitter, plus a number of Midas DL451 and DL351 modular I/O devices, totaling nearly 500 inputs, all of which were accessible to all six consoles via the AES50 network. The DL431 splitters also provided pristine audio feeds to the NRK TV trucks for simultaneous TV broadcast.

As well as mixing monitors for its own stage, the PRO9s were used to create multiple stem mixes of the performance, which could then be accessed from the combined network by the other consoles. “This year almost every act played with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, which meant that a lot of people needed to be able to hear each another at any one time,” explains Nilsen. “Fast and easy routing of audio between the different consoles and stages is an absolute must.”

And with quick changeovers between acts, sometimes only 30 seconds, quick scene recall is also crucial; something the MIDAS PRO Series is more than capable of delivering.

“Some acts move from one stage to another, so we also needed monitor consoles that could sync with one another,” says FOH engineer Øystein Karlsen. “Alternatively we might have an artist on stage one and a choir on stage two. In this case the consoles need to have access to each other’s audio sources to feed the monitors. As far as I am concerned MIDAS ensures that we can meet the demands of today’s musicians quickly and effectively.”

The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the most influential awards in the world. The ceremony takes place on 10th December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death, and is followed by the Nobel Peace Prize Concert. Featuring an international selection of musical artists and celebrity hosts, the concert honors the Nobel Peace Prize laureates. The Nobel Peace Prize Laureate for 2012 was named as the European Union.
